It can often be concluded from urine tests that a person may have stones or sand in the urinary tract. Without waiting for an attack, we learn more about urolithiasis of the bladder and kidneys.
The culprit of urolithiasis is considered an inborn error of metabolism. This is - the reason for the formation of insoluble salts, which in fact, form stones in the kidneys. However, even with an innate predisposition to develop the disease may not, unless there are factors contributing to it. These factors are many, and each of them could be decisive.
Factors of kidney stones
- Climatic. A person living in a country with a hot climate is more likely than others to develop urolithiasis. He loses much more moisture, evaporating with sweat, than a resident of the middle lane. As a result, the concentration of some salts in the body increases, which provokes the process of stone formation.
- Geographic factor. The composition of water and nutritional characteristics are of great importance. Hard water (containing a lot of calcium salts) promotes the development of urolithiasis. Spicy and acidic foods increase urine acidity. From this, stones are formed faster.
- Chronicles of the stomach and intestines also provoke the formation of stones (gastritis, colitis, peptic ulcer).
- Diseases of the kidneys and genitourinary system often act as predisposing factors for stone formation (pyelonephritis, hydronephrosis, cystitis, prostate adenoma, prostatitis).
Sometimes the disease is latent, and it is determined by chance. Sometimes its first signs appear only when the stone has already reached a rather large size and the patient feels dull vague pain in the lumbar region. But most often the disease is manifested by severe paroxysmal pain, the presence of blood in the urine and poor general health.
Basically, stones are formed in one kidney, but sometimes in both. When a stone is located in the ureter, the patient feels frequent urge to urinate, pain migrating from the lower back to the inner surface of the thigh, groin and lower abdomen.
If the disease is left untreated, kidney and ureteral stones lead to acute or chronic pyelonephritis. A purulent infection of the kidney may develop, and then it will need to be removed. And stones in the bladder without therapy can give rise to the development of severe acute cystitis.
Very serious consequence of nephrolithiasis is anuria (violation of the outflow of urine). This may be due to blockage of the urinary tract.
For the prevention of kidney stones stick to the rules:
- Do not eat: Navar, chocolate, spicy and fried foods, refuse coffee, cocoa.
- Limit: fatty foods, salt. Do not overeat.
- Drink plenty of water (at least 1,5 liters per day). Take a variety of diuretic herbs.
- Do not overcool, keep your lower back warm. If you experience even mild discomfort in the lower back, immediately contact your urologist.
Treatment for kidney stones
Treatment is conservative, instrumental and operative. With a small stone and no complications, it is conservative and includes an appropriate diet and medication.
Large kidney stones are removed only promptly. Ureteral stones, as a rule, can be lowered into the bladder and removed endoscopically, that is, without an incision.
